In solidarity with the people of Nicaragua
The Jesuits of Canada have sent a letter to the Government of Canada urging it to take action against the violence and repression that has been taking place in Nicaragua since April 2018. The call to action sent to the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Foreign Affairs, is in support of the call from the Conference of Jesuit Provincials of Latin America and the Caribbean (CPAL), the Central American Province of the Society of Jesus, and the Association of Universities entrusted to the Society of Jesus in Latin America (AUSJAL) to the international community for solidarity.
The statement asks the Canadian government to take action by calling on the government of Nicaragua to immediately respect the civil rights of the people of Nicaragua as enshrined in their constitution, by denouncing the continued atrocities of the current government against its people, by issuing a statement of support for the findings of the independent investigation conducted by the OAS, and by urging a peaceful resolution to the current political crisis in Nicaragua.
Canadian Jesuits International (CJI) stands in solidarity with our Jesuit brothers and the people of Nicaragua who have been severely affected by the current crisis.
