Earth Day 2026

April 22nd marks Earth Day an international holiday dedicated to recognizing Earth’s ecosystems as humanity’s common home and the need to protect her to enhance people’s livelihoods, counteract climate change, and stop the collapse of biodiversity.

‘Caring for Our Common Home’ couldn’t be more vital especially in the places outreached by our network – where the repercussions of climate change and extreme weather isn’t just a future worry but a devastating reality.

From flash flooding in Nigeria and Myanmar earthquakes to deadly droughts in Sub-Saharan Africa forcing hunger on vulnerable communities – interventions that not only offer humanitarian relief but adaptive solutions for the future is so important.

Climate action without justice will not solve the problems of inequality, poverty and the inevitable damage fossil fuels and emissions inflict upon the planet. Only through solutions founded on equity can we bring about sustainability for the future – so that no one is left behind.

As a network, we support projects that are centered on preparedness where sustainability and climate justice go hand in hand.

  • Irish Jesuits International: In Dublin City University an exciting project combining climate action and research is happening. In partnership with IJI and the Jesuit Centre for Ecology & Development (JCED) sustainable ‘victory gardens’ aim to counter food insecurity for Malawi’s most vulnerable communities. Read more: here
  • Canadian Jesuits International: Joining the urgent call for world leaders to accelerate climate action and for everyone to share the responsibility of protecting our common home, CJI highlights its support for the work of its Jesuit partners who promote sustainable ecology and sustainability in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.   • American Jesuits International: During a recent trip to El Salvador, AJI staff and board members visited a rural cooperative supported by Solidaridad CVX, a member of the Comparte Network. The visit highlighted how small scale agricultural initiatives can leverage local knowledge and international solidarity to promote sustainable livelihoods. Read more: here
  • Jesuit Missions – United Kingdom: As we celebrate Earth Day 2026, we look at how our partners at the Centre Arrupe Madagascar are placing faith and young people at the heart of their environmental efforts. Read more: here
  • Alboan & Entreculturas: As part of the Pan-Amazonian Ecclesial Network (REPAM), Alboan and Entreculturas are accompanying Indigenous women leaders at the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues in New York, advocating for the rights of Amazonian peoples whose territories and livelihoods are under threat from illegal mining, deforestation, and land grabbing.
